“Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey have been working together for nearly 20 years in a relationship founded on their shared technical creativity and quest for perfection.

In 1999 they began working on a new generation of tourbillon, one specifically designed to improve the timekeeping of the mechanical wristwatch. Four years later, they unveiled “Greubel Forsey” and stunned horological aficionados with their innovative Double Tourbillon 30°, a timepiece clearly demonstrating their twin goals of innovation and excellence.

Robert and Stephen continue to build on their deep traditional knowledge gained with four decades of combined experience in high-end complicated timepieces, by inventing and developing technically valid horological complications to rigorous aesthetic principles.”

By modifying the historically unchanged tourbillon complication, Greubel Forsey is at the forefront of watchmaking modernity. The tourbillon escapement is an important and historical mechanical complication that was invented and patented for pocket watches by  Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1801. The tourbillon (French for “whirlwind”) was designed to counteract the negative effects of gravity on the hairspring in the balance wheel. The tourbillon is encapsulating carriage that rotates the entire balance assembly such that the hairspring and balance wheel is “never” in the same spot, therefore no “unbalanced” areas of the balance wheel remain statically in place.

In practice, the chronometric effects of a tourbillon in a pocket watch made sense. Pocket watches usually sat in the crown up position and very rarely deviated from that vertical plane. Wrist watches are much more dynamic. The move through various planes are rarely ever static. This proposed a problem that Greubel Forsey sought to find a solution to. Their scientific inquiry and research led them to several “experimental” technologies that resulted in the invention of the 30° double tourbillon, later the 24 second, 25° tourbillon, and most recently the inclined double balancier.
